Precision Slit Metals

Slit metals are relied upon by many manufacturing industries to produce precision components and products, it’s the preferred manufacturing process with many benefits including low waste, higher efficiencies resulting from less material change overs and full traceability.

Using specialist slitting machinery, our process maintains high tolerances, material consistency and precision, these are critical requirements to the key sectors we service, namely Gas & Oil, Electrical, Telecommunications and general presswork.

Our ISO 9001 approved processes are maintained throughout our in-house capabilities, with the aim of becoming the UK’s leading slit metal provider. Our automated slitting and traverse winding lines enable us to offer the highest quality and competitive solutions to all manufacturing sectors.

Slit metal capabilities

Our precision machinery is capable of slitting coils in a multitude of materials including customer’s own stock from 2.5mm to 1000mm in thicknesses ranging from 0.05mm to 3mm. The coils can then be produced as pancake coils with inner diameters from 100mm to 500mm or when greater lengths are required these can be traverse wound onto Argonaut or Din 355 reels. Our slit metals can also be supplied as cut blanks and edge dressed strip.

Our full-service slit metal capabilities include

  • Material handling
  • Stock material for short lead-times
  • Slitting of stainless steel, Nickel & Copper alloys and plated strip including Gold, Silver, Tin, Brass and Chrome
  • Edge dressing
  • Traverse winding
  • Decoiling

Traverse Winding

Traverse winding has been a specialist capability at Sturge for many years, using bespoke winders to layer metal strip smoothly and effectively from one side to another on a reel whilst maintaining accurate tension control.

Sturge Metals supplies any metal strip slit and traverse wound onto Argonaut or Din 355 reels, in widths from 2.50mm up to 19mm, with thickness ranging from 0.099mm up to 0.80mm. With demand increasing from multiple industries to maximise the efficiency of their manufacturing operations, reduce machine downtime, and minimise material changeovers, many manufacturers are making the switch to traverse winding to help to achieve that.

Decoiling solutions for pancake and traverse coils

Sturge have made significant investment to develop and manufacture a dedicated decoiling solution to support faster handling of conventional pancake and traverse coils.

Our dedicated unit has capabilities for handling DIN 355, argonaut spools or even combining both where two types of materials may be running through a press. This flexibility and automation is proving highly effective in increasing process efficiencies and reducing lead-times.

Decoiling specification

  • Footprint – 1250 (Feed arms extended) X 690 X 1380mm High
  • Twin AC Motors 230/400v 50Hz – 0.37Kw – 2820 rpm.
  • Twin variable control – 230v Input – 0 – 650Hz – 0.4 – 15Kw
  • Twin shafts suitable for both DIN 355 and Argonaut spools, Maximum load 100Kgs each shaft.
